HAPPINESS, FEAR, ANGER, DISGUST, SADNESS

I have used 3D fMRI brain scans of people perceiving the five most universal emotions to inform my glass vessels. These scans show activity in the neural regions associated with the interpretation of specific emotions.

By clustering, texturing and the selection of colour this series of work aims to create glass objects that embody emotions. Like a mini experiment I’m interested in the viewer’s emotional response to these objects.

The making process involves the building of clay and fabric moulds, which the molten glass is blow into. The glass picks up the texture and form of the mould to create the piece. Every mould is unique and due to the nature of the material, can only be used once.

Thanks to Dr. Fusar-Poli for kindly contributing his research: ‘Functional Atlas of Emotional Faces Processing: a voxel-based meta-analysis of 105 functional magnetic resonance imaging studies’, 2009.
